First cohort of Applied Behavior Analysis program graduates
(SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – MAY 23, 2024) The first cohort of Empire State University’s Master of Science in applied behavior analysis program has graduated. The program, offered completely online, began in Spring 2022 and paired students with the clinical experiences needed to become board-certified behavior analysts and New York State licensed behavior analysts.
“The program was established with a goal to develop coursework that focuses on a compassionate, humble approach. It is critical for the field of behavior analysis to ensure we are listening and learning, and we hope that our degree has prepared students to focus on affirming culturally-responsive practices that are socially valid and community-informed,” said Dr. Noor Syed, assistant professor and program coordinator for the applied behavior analysis program.
Through the program, students gain field experience in different settings, including schools, residential facilities, and health care organizations.
Christina McConnell, a graduate of the first cohort, said she learned about the program through her previous coursework with Syed and her desire to pursue meaningful work with students.
“My experience has been overwhelmingly positive, and I learned so much more than I could have imagined,” McConnell said. “I feel honored to be a part of a program that cares so much for its students and to have access to incredibly supportive and knowledgeable professors.”
Following graduation, McConnell said she hopes to continue working in public education and play a larger role in behavioral analytic work. She said developing close communication with her professors helped her succeed in this program and learn more about how her education helps her in her everyday work with students.
Syed said, in the future, the program will expand course content to represent a broader application of applied behavior analysis to fit an increasing scope of practice across New York State. Syed said they are also focusing on accreditation and program revision.
“We are proud to have a growing M.S. program that is aligned with the mission and vision of the Center for Autism Advocacy: Research, Education, and Supports (CAARES), which is focused on inclusivity and creating a supportive environment for all,” Syed said. “Collaboration, bidirectional feedback, and focusing on what is important to the people we support, including our students, is key, and we hope this will carry forward with our wonderful graduates.”
