(SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – MAY 2, 2024) Not all heroes wear capes — some are also working to earn their degrees in their spare time, like Melissa Massari, who pursued an education centered on helping others.

“I chose Empire State University because of its reputation for flexible learning options that cater to non-traditional students like myself,” Massari said. “The university’s program offerings in human services, commitment to community engagement, and its emphasis on real-world application of knowledge aligned well with my goals.”

While studying for her bachelor’s degree, Massari obtained her New York State EMT license and exterior firefighter certificate. She now works as a trained EMT and volunteer firefighter and serves as Assistant Director of Youth Advocate Programs, Inc.

“It allows me to directly contribute to the well-being and safety of my community, and the sense of fulfillment I derive from helping others is unparalleled,” Massari said. “This work also provides valuable hands-on experience that complements my academic studies and reinforces the practical relevance of my education.”

As for what’s next, Massari will do what she’s always done and help others in her community. Massari said she plans to continue her work in human services with the youth community and volunteer as an EMT.

“I aspire to remain engaged with Empire State University as an alum, giving back to the community that has provided me with invaluable knowledge and support,” Massari said. “The university’s supportive environment, diverse community, and emphasis on hands-on learning have truly shaped me into a more capable and compassionate individual.”
