SUNY touts Empire State University’s success in interview
(February 1, 2024 — ALBANY, NY) On Wednesday, January 31, SUNY Chancellor John King was the guest on Capitol Pressroom, a daily, public radio program broadcast from the New York State Capitol building on the Capital Region’s WCNY.
In this episode, Host David Lombardo leads Chancellor King in a discussion about the financial shape of New York’s public colleges and universities and outlines the steps needed to maintain a strong SUNY system.
Lombardo specifically asks King how SUNY might be able to replicate SUNY Empire’s enrollment successes systemwide.
“Empire’s growth reflects that there are a lot of folks who are working, who need the kind of flexibility that an online degree program offers, and also Empire’s success reflects their use of something called Prior Learning Assessment, where they’re really willing to work with students to look at their transcripts from maybe a college where they started but didn’t finish, to look at workforce training they’ve received, maybe they’ve received certificates through their union and then that gets counted as credit,” King said. “Empire’s a really creative response to the needs of many New Yorkers.”
