SUNY Empire and SUNY Orange Receive High-Needs Nursing Grant

Institutions to Receive $100,000 for Nursing Pathway Innovation Hub 

State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor John B. King Jr. recently announced SUNY Empire and SUNY Orange will receive $100,000 to create a collaborative Nursing Pathway Innovation Hub using monies provided via the state’s High Needs Nursing Fund. 

The initiative is a joint effort between SUNY Empire, SUNY Orange’s Health Professions division, and SUNY Orange Plus’ workforce development branch, designed to strengthen academic mobility and student progress across the nursing education continuum. While many nursing programs are addressing enrollment challenges, this proposal focuses on a different and pressing statewide need—optimizing nursing program capacity and ensuring that qualified learners move efficiently from entry-level healthcare training through RN licensure and BSN (bachelor of science in nursing) completion. 

“As we noted in our grant proposal, the hub will serve as a strategic bridge, aligning workforce development certification programs, associate-degree nursing education, and SUNY Empire’s BSN completion pathways to model system integration, shared student tracking, and co-enrollment innovation,” said Mayda Gonzalez-Bosch, SUNY Orange academic associate vice president for the health professions. “This is a bold, system-aligned commitment to advancing nursing education within SUNY, and it will show how shared resources, integrated data and coordinated academics can address workforce gaps while enhancing student success and mobility.

“This partnership creates a clear, supported path from certification to bachelor’s degree—exactly what working nursing students need,” said Carol DeNysschen, dean of the College of Health and Human Services at SUNY Empire. “By meeting students where they are and removing barriers between institutions, we’re helping more nurses advance their education and their careers without putting their lives on hold.”  

“We recognize that this is an ambitious and transformative effort—one that will require sustained, multi-year support to achieve its goals,” she added. “Continued investment and collaboration will not only strengthen opportunities for SUNY Orange and SUNY Empire students but also enhance their educational experiences. It will also serve as a replicable model across the SUNY system, advancing SUNY’s mission of innovation, equity, and excellence in healthcare education.” 

Key elements of the SUNY Empire-SUNY Orange hub include: 

  • Integrated academic pathways between the institutions that align workforce certification programs, associate-degree nursing education, and RN-to-BSN completion pathways. 
  • Shared advising and data infrastructure, including a Nursing Pathways Dashboard to track student progression and inform data-driven decision-making. 
  • Creation/expansion of bridge programs and microcredentials to support non-credit and waitlisted students transitioning into for-credit nursing programs. 
  • RN–BSN co-enrollment and dual advising, allowing RN students to begin BSN coursework in their final semester at SUNY Orange 
  • Faculty and advisor collaboration, including shared professional development in universal design for learning (UDL), simulation instruction, and evidence-based teaching practices. 

Gonzalez-Bosch added that the project is designed as a scalable and sustainable model, with long-term integration into institutional operations and the potential for replication across other SUNY campuses. Ultimately, the Nursing Pathway Innovation Hub aims to strengthen system coordination, accelerate upward mobility for nursing students, and contribute meaningfully to addressing healthcare workforce needs across the state. 

Creating Positive Change: Grad Student Earns Degree in Social and Public Policy

Christol Wright ‘09 has long been interested in social change and justice. That’s what inspired the Rochester resident to pursue a master’s in social and public policy at Empire State University. 

“I am passionate about improving community services through effective and equitable public policies,” says Wright, a winter 2025 graduate. “This felt like the right time to deepen my impact and understanding in this area.” 

Wright first began her journey at SUNY Empire as an undergraduate student, earning her bachelor’s in community and human services in 2009 before enrolling in a master’s program in 2024. She says the experience she gained while pursuing her bachelor’s degree convinced her to stick with the online institution for her master’s. 

“I had a very positive learning experience and grew both personally and professionally over the years,” says Wright, who also holds associate degrees in addictions counseling and human services. “The knowledge I gained allowed me to apply what I learned directly to the workplace and in everyday life to help others.” 

Throughout the course of her program, Wright has balanced her studies with a number of other obligations. In addition to maintaining jobs as both a substance abuse counselor and an AmeriCorps VISTA member with the Police Assisted Addiction & Recovery Initiative, she has devoted her time to serving in the Empire State Service Corps. Specifically, she’s worked with SUNY Empire’s Office of Health and Wellness, focusing on connecting students with resources to combat food insecurity. Wright says her experience with the program has “left a lasting impact” on her.  

“My degree in Social and Public Policy is directly connected to my Service Corps experience. Many students face food insecurity while pursuing higher education, and social and public policy plays a critical role in advocating for systemic change,” she explains. “My work involved helping students access benefits, such as food assistance, without unnecessary barriers, aligning with my focus on policy advocacy and improving access to essential services for individuals working toward a better future.” 

Going forward, Wright plans to build on this experience by completing a Master of Social Work program. 

“I hope to work directly with underserved populations to create positive change and outcomes that promote equity for all,” she says.   

Empire State University Community Commemorates Wreaths Across America

In celebration of our nation’s veterans, alumni and staff at Empire State University participated in Wreaths Across America. The nationwide event honors and remembers those who have served our country. 

According to the Wreaths Across America website, the event took place at 5,598 participating locations nationwide this year. Volunteers placed more than 3.1 million sponsored veterans’ wreaths. And at Arlington National Cemetery, over 30,000 volunteers helped place wreaths at 265,000 gravesites.

Meet graduate Joanna Succi, who is receiving a Bachelor of Science in Business, Management and Economics.   

How has your experience at Empire State University shaped who you are? 

Empire State University has had a huge impact on who I am today. As a full-time worker and single mom, going back to school in 2021 was a big step but it was something I really wanted for myself. Finishing my degree was a personal goal, and SUNY Empire made it feel possible. The flexibility and support I have received helped me balance work, parenting, and school, even on the toughest days. This experience taught me how strong and capable I really am, and it helped me grow both personally and professionally. I am proud of how far I have come, and I am hopeful that this degree will open new opportunities for growth in my career. 

Can you tell me how your experience with the VMRC has impacted you as a student? 

The VMRC has been a huge help throughout my time at SUNY Empire. The advisors guided me through getting my military credits transferred and made sure I received the military tuition rate, which made going back to school financially possible. More than that, they made me feel supported. I always knew I had people I could reach out to who understood my background and genuinely wanted to help me succeed. Having that kind of support system made the whole experience less stressful and helped me stay confident and focused. 

What are your future plans? 

My plan is to continue growing in my career in logistics and account management, and to use everything I have learned at SUNY Empire to move into more leadership-focused roles. I am also seriously considering going back to get my master’s degree. Down the road, I would love to come back to SUNY Empire as a professor and help other students learn about supply chain management. The idea of using my real-world experience to support and inspire future students really motivates me. And of course, I want to mentor others who are balancing work, family, and school just like I did. 

What’s one class you didn’t expect to love but had a great experience in? 

There were two classes I did not expect to love. They were Women in Management and Organizational Behavior. I figured those classes would just be another requirement, but they ended up being my favorite classes. They helped me understand my strengths as a leader and showed me how I can grow even more. The discussions were relatable to real-life situations at work, and it made the courses really engaging and meaningful. 

If you could give one piece of advice to future graduates, what would it be? 

Give yourself grace and keep going, even when things feel overwhelming. Whether you are working full-time, raising a family, or juggling a lot at once, every step forward counts. Do not be afraid to ask for help or use the resources SUNY Empire offers; they are there for a reason. The journey is not always easy, but when you finally reach the finish line, the pride you feel makes every challenge worth it. 

Lauren Gaskins ’18, ’22: A Grandmother’s Inspiration

Lauren Gaskins ’18, ’22 spent a lifetime watching her grandmother take care of the people who lived in her New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) complex in the Bronx. There was no nonprofit, no board, and no staff. It was simply powered by her grandmother’s passion and energy for helping others.

Shortly before her grandmother died last December, a woman said to Gaskins, “What am I going to do without her?  Your grandmother is the reason why I have food on my table, my kids have book bags, my family has turkeys for Thanksgiving, and my kids have Christmas gifts.”

The comment nagged at Gaskins. “I couldn’t let that go,” Gaskins says. “So, before my grandmother died, I told her, ‘I got this.’”

A week after her grandmother passed away, Gaskins launched the Barbara Holmes Impact Foundation. Named for her grandmother, the non-profit is “dedicated to uplifting families, empowering individuals, and creating lasting change in our community.”

A Legacy is Launched

Gaskins grew up adoring her grandmother, who arrived in New York City at the age of 12, after running away from her home in South Carolina. Holmes found refuge with her own grandmother in NYCHA housing in the Bronx, where she would single-handedly raise six children and seven grandchildren in a three-bedroom apartment.

Gaskins lived nearby with her mom and sister. A self-described “troubled child,” Gaskins attended the Fordham High School of the Arts, where she was eventually kicked out and sent to the Jill Chaifetz High School. “I had caring teachers and a caring principal who changed the trajectory of my life,” she says. 

As a teen mom, Gaskins finished high school early and began attending Empire State University in 2014. She also worked full-time at a daycare for teen moms. After graduating in 2018 with a B.S. in educational studies, she went on to get her MBA in 2022. She set up a business helping others establish their own businesses.  

Teach the Skills

No matter where she was in her life, Gaskins always helped her grandmother help others, whether it was attending events, making deliveries, or packing food boxes. Now as the head of her own nonprofit, Gaskins wants to do more than help people get through immediate challenges; she wants to give people the skills and knowledge they need to thrive.

For example, when she gave out school supplies this year, she also handed out flyers inviting parents to a series of workshops about Individualized Education Programs (IEP), which are required for children who have special needs. The goal was to teach parents how to be advocates for their children who have IEPs.

Other projects include scholarships for swimming lessons and an upcoming job fair. Gaskins also plans to hire a grants officer and to build more partnerships.

“My grandmother did all this work for a community for 50 years without an organization behind her,” says Gaskins, now a mother of four. “Everything was just from the kindness of her heart. I want to expand this all over New York City, to other boroughs and the rest of New York state.”

Carol DeNysschen believes in leading by example. 

“I adopted this philosophy after working under outstanding leaders who demonstrated integrity, empathy, and professionalism. I strive to be that kind of leader—someone who models a strong work ethic and inspires others through actions,” she says. “[It] makes guidance more authentic. People trust what you say when they see you living it.” 

The mantra is just part of what DeNysschen brings to her new role at Empire State University: As dean of the recently formed College of Health and Human Services, the Saratoga Springs resident also offers a wealth of experience in higher ed. DeNysschen, who began her career as a dietitian, formally entered academia in 2007—serving as a clinical instructor at the University at Buffalo, where she previously earned her Ph.D. in exercise science.  

“From there, I moved to a tenure-track position at Buffalo State University, and after earning tenure and promotion, I was appointed department chair. That’s when I discovered how much I enjoyed administration,” she recalls. “I loved the blend of teaching and leadership, and the opportunity to help faculty and programs thrive.” 

Later, when a dean’s position opened up at Buffalo State, DeNysschen—who also holds a master’s in public health and an MBA—decided to go for it.  

“I saw it as a chance to have an even greater impact on students and the broader community,” she explains. 

After serving as dean for three years, DeNysschen left the institution to pursue the SUNY Empire job, which she’s held since July. She says the university’s “commitment to helping others reach their goals” drew her to the position. Now, as she settles into her new role, DeNysschen hopes colleagues will see her as a partner in that mission.  

“I’d like the university community to know that I truly value collaboration, positivity, and progress,” she says. “My approach is rooted in transparency and teamwork, and I believe that when we bring out the best in each other, amazing things happen.”

How has your experience at Empire State University shaped who you are?   

My experience at Empire State University has played a major role in shaping who I am today. As a veteran returning to school, Empire gave me the flexibility and support I needed to balance my education with my responsibilities at home. Through my sociology coursework, I’ve developed a deeper understanding of the social systems that influence people’s lives, including my own. The program helped me find my voice, sharpen my analytical skills, and regain confidence in my academic abilities. Overall, Empire has strengthened me as a learner, a leader, and a father, and it has prepared me for the next steps in my career and education. 

Can you tell me how your experiences with the Military and Veteran Opportunity Program have impacted you as a student?  

My experiences have had a meaningful impact on my time as a student. As a veteran, having a dedicated space and staff who understand military life made me feel supported and connected from the start. It provided guidance, resources, and a sense of community that helped me navigate both academic and personal challenges. It strengthened my confidence, kept me motivated, and made my student experience feel more grounded and supported. 

What are your future plans?   

My future plans are to continue my education as a graduate student and earn my master’s degree in criminology. I aim to build on the foundation I established in my undergraduate studies and deepen my understanding of the criminal justice system, enabling me to make a meaningful impact in the field. 

What’s something SUNY Empire gave you that you couldn’t get anywhere else?  

True flexibility paired with genuine support. As a veteran, parent, and working adult, I needed a school that understood my life demands without compromising academic expectations. SUNY Empire gave me the space to grow at my own pace, the encouragement to challenge myself, and the confidence to pursue graduate studies. That combination of independence and real, personal support is something I haven’t experienced anywhere else. 

What is your favorite moment from your time here?  

My favorite moment from my time at SUNY Empire was the feeling of accomplishment when I realized how far I had come, academically, personally, and professionally. There wasn’t just one event, but a moment during my coursework when everything clicked, and I recognized that I was truly growing and preparing for the next chapter of my life. That sense of progress and confidence is something I’ll never forget. 

Empire State University Foundation Acquires Historic Clarke House in Saratoga Springs

1832 Greek Revival property to serve as venue for donor events, alumni gatherings, and community engagement 

The Empire State University Foundation has acquired the Clarke House, a historic 1832 Greek Revival property located at 46 Circular Street in Saratoga Springs, adjacent to the university’s 2 Union Avenue location. 

The Foundation purchased the property for $2.5 million, thanks in part to a $1.1 million gift from the property’s former owners, Cathy and Elliott Masie.  

The Clarke House will serve as a venue for donor cultivation, alumni gatherings, community engagement, and other official university functions. Situated on .85 acres in the heart of Saratoga Springs, the property features a beautifully preserved interior suitable for small receptions, a screened porch, landscaped gardens, and outdoor space for events. 

“This acquisition reflects the generosity of Cathy and Elliott Masie and the strategic vision of our Foundation board,” said Veronica Fitzgerald, vice president of advancement and executive director of the Foundation. “The Clarke House will allow us to deepen relationships with donors and community partners in ways that directly benefit our students through enhanced scholarship support and program funding.” 

The Foundation plans to begin renovations in early 2026, including HVAC upgrades, accessibility improvements, and historic preservation work. The property is expected to be operational by late summer 2026. 

“We are committed to preserving the historic character of this landmark property,” said Marian Conway, Ph.D., Chair of the Foundation Board. “We are working with the City of Saratoga Springs to ensure the Clarke House continues to be a treasured part of the community for generations to come.” 

The Empire State University Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises private funds to support student scholarships, academic programs, and university infrastructure.  

Empire State University Honors Class of 2025 Winter Graduates in Albany Ceremonies

Empire State University celebrated 360 graduates during two ceremonies on Friday, December 5 at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center. Empire State University Provost Rai Kathuria and New York State Assemblymember Carrie Woerner were in attendance. 

The graduates honored collectively live in 62 different New York State counties, 25 U.S. states and territories, and 19 countries around the world. They ranged from ages 19 to 74. 132 of the graduates were military-affiliated students including active-duty Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, Reserve, veterans, spouses, and other dependents. 

The ceremony featured student speakers Michelle Panchana Mendez, who earned a Bachelor of Science in human resources management, and Hailey Cox ‘20, who earned a Master of Arts in adult learning. 

Empire State University Provost Rai Kathuria said, “Your journeys have been different. But you all share the simple fact that you refused to give up. You earned your degree, and today we proudly celebrate your tenacity.” 

New York State Assemblymember Carrie Woerner said, “You are not just graduates today. You are warriors. Because let’s face it, this moment didn’t come easy. You have been juggling work deadlines, kids’ soccer practices, and the occasional existential crisis while writing research papers at 2 a.m. with a half-empty cup of coffee you reheated three times. And, yet, you made it.” 

Professor in the College of Business and Faculty Speaker Alan Belasen said, “To our SUNY Empire graduates—many of whom returned to school while raising children, caring for loved ones, working full-time jobs, and navigating the complexities of life—this moment belongs to you. You have balanced diapers and deadlines, board meetings and Brightspace assignments, and still found the time to study, reflect, and grow. That is no small feat. It is a triumph of spirit.” 

Professor in the College of Health and Human Services and Faculty Speaker Carrie Steinman said, “Today is certainly a celebration of your achievement, but also one of your grit, resilience, and determination. You have unlocked new opportunities, not just for yourselves, but for your families and communities. And we hope that earning your degree is not the end of your educational journey, but rather the beginning of the next one.” 

Student speaker Michelle Panchana Mendez said, “My fellow graduates, I hope you recognize your strength and all that you have achieved. Every late assignment, every chapter you read while tired, every time you showed up despite doubt… it all mattered. You earned this moment. Carry the determination that brought you here into every dream and every new beginning.” 

Student speaker Hailey Cox ‘20 said, “My fellow graduates, your voices, your ideas, your perspectives, and your lived experiences have power. You carry that power into your communities, workplaces, and families. My hope is that you leave this moment with two takeaways: First, that your voice matters. Even when the world feels uncertain or you feel unseen, your perspective can create real impact. And second, that there is power in the collective. Alone, we move forward, but together, we can change systems, lift communities, and shape the future.”

Behind the Scenes with the Office of the Registrar

Labeled the hub of academic operations at most universities, registrars’ offices oversee student registration, degree audits, transfer credits, and are responsible for conferring degrees at the end of a student’s journey. At Empire State University, the Office of the Registrar is interwoven with the student lifecycle—they are guides from beginning to end, ensuring that the unique paths of students are on track and adhering to the necessary requirements.

University Registrar Pamela Enser, Assistant Registrar Joey Van Ullen, and Assistant Registrar for Concurrence Amanda Parker take us for a behind-the-scenes look at the office’s backend processes. Enser has been with the university since 2017, Van Ullen joined two years ago, and Parker has been part of the team for three and a half years.

What does your work entail?

Van Ullen: On the records and registration side we assist students daily with registration inquiries. Our side of the office also handles grading and academic standing.

In my role, I work with the colleges preparing the term guide every term, as well as doing maintenance on our course catalog. We also do general student record maintenance.

Parker: I work on the other side of the office, which consists of transfer review, graduation review, Degree Works audits, and concurrence review. We handle the other end of things, making sure that we get all the students’ transfer credits evaluated and added to their records, that their Degree Works audits are showing accurate information … and the technical review of individualized degree plans. Also, of course, awarding degrees.

Enser: We also certify veteran students’ benefits, so if they receive any financial assistance, we do that. We issue transcripts and provide any kind of enrollment or degree verification for students, as well as printing and sending diplomas. We also help to oversee a bunch of different software—for example, CourseLeaf, the curriculum software.

We pretty much touch upon students during their entire lifecycle—we are one of the only offices that do that. We work with students sometimes before they enroll … we have a touchpoint at each part of the process.

Van Ullen: A lot of times, I’ve heard a registrar’s office is the hub of a university. A lot of other offices come to us, and we have to go to a lot of other offices for things. We don’t deal with financial aid, but a lot of students’ financial aid is based on their enrollment.

Enser: We also report any kind of student enrollment to the National Student Clearinghouse, which then reports to the National Student Loan Database. We work very closely with the Office of Decision Support when it comes to any kind of SUNY reporting.

What is the biggest challenge that your office has to navigate?

Enser: The sheer amount of transfer work that we deal with is significant due to the type of student that we usually have. Usually, they come in with an average of five transcripts from different schools over different time periods, which is a lot of transfer work for a typical institution.

Van Ullen: I’m going to speak specifically about the term guide, which is looking at the course schedule each term and what we need. One of the unique things about Empire State University is that most other institutions—particularly institutions that serve a more traditional student population—tend to have a lot of their registration front-loaded. Here, it’s kind of the opposite.  Our registration is more of a consistent flow because of the fact that students are getting admitted at various points throughout the year. A lot of times, our biggest registration rush is the month leading up to the term.

We are an access institution and it’s important that we are able to keep track of these trends and make note of when it’s a good time to be opening new sections. It usually means that we have a lot of shuffling to do … to make sure that we’ve got seats for the students who need it, that students are able to have a full-time course load so they can get financial aid if that’s what they’re looking for, and make sure that they have courses that are going to be applicable to them.

Parker: Because Empire State University is such a unique institution, our problems and challenges are a bit unique. The transfer piece is huge, because most schools don’t experience that volume of transfer coming in. We are also dealing not just with transfer credits from other colleges and universities, but also prior learning evaluations, professional learning evaluations, individualized credit for prior learning, and trying to get those all onto the records accurately and verify them can be a real challenge.

Enser: I can speak directly to an initiative that we started and worked on last year where we were able to identify students who were eligible to receive a general studies degree without any additional credits. We were able to award over 400 general studies associate degrees between the fall and the spring term. We’ll be doing that every term, but that was one of our tactics originally initiated by the strategic plan.

There’s a lot of things that we do that lead towards supporting the strategic plan and the mission of the institution. I am on the University Retention Council and there’s a lot of work that we do with Degree Works. Finding different ways to help students access information to enable their ability to successfully complete things in a timely manner.

We’re always looking at different technology to help support those roles. For example, we use a product called Laserfiche, which we use for optical character recognition software to more effectively bring data into the system when it comes to transcripts … we’re also going to be implementing a new scheduling tool that will help not only with the work of scheduling, but providing analytics to look at what and how we are offering to best serve our students.

Van Ullen: An important thing we do is always striving for accurate data. Data is the most important piece of looking at institutional effectiveness, because if your data is not accurate, then you don’t really know how things are going.

Parker: Concurrence review is how we check that the degree program meets the university, SUNY, and state requirements for that type of degree. From a concurrence standpoint, we’re supporting our students—especially those who have unique backgrounds and have a lot of credits coming in—to plan their individualized degree.

We see some interesting degree concentration titles because people have specific goals in mind, or because they have broad goals and they’re trying to get into a new field.

That’s how we support students … because we do a technical review of those degrees, we make sure that they are meeting the requirements that are set forth by the university, by SUNY, and by the State Department of Education to make sure that the integrity and value of a SUNY Empire degree is maintained.

What do you wish people knew about the work that you do?

Parker: We are making sure that the technical requirements of the degrees are being met. We enforce policies, and sometimes that makes us seem a bit like the bad guys. I wish people understood that it’s for the benefit of everyone—we want to make sure that those degrees have value. We want to make sure that things are equitable, so that all students are getting the same opportunities.

Van Ullen: I think sometimes people lose track of the fact that we have the same goals that mentors have, that student success coordinators have, that faculty have. We want students to succeed, and ultimately, we’re on this mission together. We heavily adhere to policy, but policy exists most of the time for a reason.

Enser: Seeing us as a partner is a goal that we have. We look to working with faculty and other offices as a way to keep relationships beneficial for students and find the best paths to ensure our students are successful and can meet the goals they have set. There’s a lot from SUNY that we are actively involved in. I am the transfer liaison on behalf of our institution for the SUNY Academic Momentum Campaign. If people have questions about that, they can always reach out.

What’s the best part of your job?

Van Ullen: The best part of my job is being able to solve an issue for a student.

The best part of the day is when you get on the phone with an exasperated student who can’t figure it out, and you spend 10 minutes with them, calm them down, walk them through it, and get them registered. They’re always so thankful that you were able to do that, so even though in my particular role I don’t get a ton of that on an everyday basis, when I do get an opportunity, it’s always great.

I think everyone who gets into higher education does it because they want to help students reach their goals, so even in the smallest ways on a day-to-day basis, it makes the job fulfilling.

Parker: Our office is amazing, and working with the people in it is one of the best parts of my day. Pam Enser has built an amazing team. Enser: We’re a pretty big office—we’re at 30 people right now. The best part of my job is solving problems. Being in a registrar’s office, you’re constantly trying to find unique ways to figure out something new. It can be anything, and I enjoy that.
